ElectricKit Conversion for Aga Cookers

TRUSTED. CONTROLLABLE. LOW ENERGY

The ElectricKit can be installed into one of our Fully Refurbished Aga Cookers, or as a Conversion for your existing Aga Cooker.

The ElectricKit Aga Cooker Conversion (or "Electrikit" as some mistakenly call it!) has been available since the early 2010's.

A revolutionary of its time, the ElectricKit Conversion incorporated electric elements directly next to the Aga cooker ovens and inside the integrated ElectricKit hotplates.

Each hotplate can be turned up and down depending on the temperature needed. Each can be boiling, or simmering etc. This is done via a numbered dial 1-8.

The right-hand ElectricKit ovens (typically roasting/simmering etc) can be adjusted to a temperature using the display. This shows the target and current temperatures of your top right hand oven. Your bottom ElectricKit oven will automatically be 35% cooler than the top oven. If your top oven is set to a traditional roasting setting of 220c, the bottom oven will automatically be at around 140c,

The hotcupboard section (simmering/warming ovens) on our 4 oven ElectricKit models are controlled together, via a dial 1-8.

On our 3 Oven ElectricKit Conversions, the new display will have 4 dials numbered 1-8. One for each hotplate, one for RH ovens, and one for LH oven.

How does the ElectricKit Conversion work?

RH Hotplate Element: 1500w

LH Hotplate Element: 1500w

Main RH Oven Element: 1800w

3 Oven LH Oven Element: 1100w

4 Oven Hotcupboard Element: 550w

Standard Induction Hotplate: 1500w

(Manufactured by a third party. This replaces one of the hotplates)

High Power Induction Hotplate: 2800w

(Manufactured by a third party. This replaces one of the hotplates)

Your existing Aga Cooker will move heat from a single source, eg. your oil/gas burner or 13amp element, using a myriad of conductions and air ducts. These are removed during the ElectricKit Conversion process, along with your 'Ash Pit' (a name from the solid fuel days!), outer barrels and cast iron hotplates. We usually take these away for recycling but you are more than welcome to keep anything you might find a use for.

Once all of the loose-fill vermiculite and the redundant cast iron parts are removed from your Aga Cooker and loaded onto our van, the ElectricKit Conversion can begin!

Your original cast iron ovens are modified slightly to make way for the new ElectricKit thermostats, then rebuilt in place. The ElectricKit Main Oven element is placed in-between the Right Hand ovens, and the new hotplates are fitted (with their integrated elements). A new state-of-the-art insulation blanket is wrapped below, around and above the ovens to reduce excess heat loss and keep your energy bills down.

ElectricKit Conversion - The Pros and Cons

In line with our business ethos of honesty and transparency, we will always give you the pros and cons for your choice of Aga Cooker or Conversion. Being open about the strengths and potential shortfalls of each option, allows us to manage expectations and give you the absolute best solution for your lifestyle.

Considering a conversion for your Traditional 'Always On' Aga Cooker?

We've laid out all the details, pros and cons, as well as technical details you need.

ElectricKit vs eControl Comparison

Advantages of the ElectricKit Original:

  • Established company, manufacturing since 2010s.
  • Minimal revisits on installations - very resilient system.
  • Large community of users who have converted already.
  • Manually set temperatures for the top roasting oven via an easy to use, accurate temperature display.
  • See both your target temperature and your current temperature of the top oven.
  • Hotplates are independently controlled via easy-to-read dials numbered 1-8.
  • 2 x 13amp fused spur switches required (normal sockets can be easily adapted).
  • Ability to add third party timers onto each power supply. One for the hotplates and one for the ovens.
  • Easy for engineers to install and a bigger network of agents.
  • Usually a faster lead time (depending on demand).
  • For 4 oven models, the hotcupboard element is hidden, so it doesn't reduce oven space.
  • For 4 oven models, the hotcupboard section is controllable, via a numbered dial 1-8.
  • No metal baffle required in the top oven (compared to other conversion kits).
  • No strong smells or lots of smoke on first use.

Disadvantages of the ElectricKit Original:

  • Slightly dated, industrial-style metal control panel.
  • Learning curve with the change to traditional cooking style (grill at the top of the bottom oven, for example).
  • Short manufacturer warranty (we offer our own 5-year warranty for our customers).
  • Hotplates can only be left on half heat when the lids are closed. They can overheat and require repair if left on full.
  • Manual temperature can only be set on the Roasting Oven. Bottom oven is automatically 35% cooler than the top oven temperature.
  • No integrated Wifi control.

We also offer the newer, upgraded ElectricKit Classic for even more control.

The ElectricKit Conversion - Heat Up Times

With your traditional 'always on' Aga Cooker, you don't have to think about heat up times - it's always on! Unfortunately, this means that it's always using energy (even overnight). The ElectricKit Conversion makes your Aga Cooker efficient, giving you the flexibility of turning parts on and off, as well as turning temperatures up and down. If you'd like to turn your ElectricKit Aga Cooker off, or on a more efficient 'slumber' setting, you will need to know about pre-heat times.

Bear in mind, you can utilise a third-party timer to automatically turn either your hotplates on/off, or your ovens on/off. This way, you won't need to *think* about pre-heating your ElectricKit Aga Cooker! Time it to reach temperature by breakfast, turn off over lunch then back up to full temperature for dinner, before turning off overnight - perfect.

Top Right Hand Oven

the below are approximations

(from cold) – Roasting (220c) in 120 mins.

(from cold) - Baking (180c) in 90 mins.

The Bottom Right Hand Oven will sit 65% cooler than the temperature in the top oven (due to the one-element setup).

Hotplates

the below are approximations

(from cold) – Simmering Temp in 15 mins.

(from cold) - Boiling Temp in 30 mins.

When always recommend using your RH Hotplate as your preferred hotplate, since it may be already warm due to the ambient heat if the ovens below are already on.

ElectricKit Aga Cooker - Running Costs

As with every Aga Cooker, each one will have its own idiosyncrasies and will run slightly different (one of the joys of individual, non-conventional cookers!). Your ElectricKit Conversion will be similar, with every family having their own lifestyle and habits.

If your main priority is low running costs:

You have the ability to run your Top RH Oven as and when required - even timing them to come on automatically with a third party timer.

You can use the hotplates as and when required, but they are the most expensive part to run. Utilising the floor of your (already on) ovens will be more efficient - or even better, upgrade to an induction hob for efficient, instant heat!

If your main priority is ambient room heat:

You have the ability to turn your Top RH Oven to a full roasting temperature (between 220c-240c), and turn on both hotplates to half heat, with their lids down.

Of course, your running costs will increase when your cooker in on full power.

For a nice in-between, and quicker heat up times, we recommend putting your Top RH Oven into a slumber/simmer temperature (120c-140c) and bringing up to temperature when required.

The manufacturers of the ElectricKit Original System have chosen to list their running costs as an 'example lifestyle' rather than individual settings costs. We are working on clearer calculations from our own in-house testing!

Ovens timed to reach cooking temperature twice a day: approx 37.83 kWh per week.

Ovens on 24/7 at 220c: approx 132.35 kWh per week.
