eControl Conversion for Aga Cookers

INNOVATIVE. EFFICIENT. FLEXIBLE.

The modern eControl System can be installed into one of our Fully Refurbished Aga Cookers, or as a Conversion for your existing Aga Cooker.

The most innovative system on the market when it comes to Aga Cooker Conversions. The eControl System utilises electric elements above and below the cast iron ovens to allow even distribution of heat.

Each oven and each hotplate can be individually controlled with separate temperature dials. The target temperature of the ovens will be displayed in the respective screens, with an indicator light above to display when the oven is ready to be used.

The hotcupboard section (simmering/warming ovens) on our 4 oven eControl models are pre-set with temperatures and controlled with one ON/OFF button.

You also have the option of connecting an external fan to assist with oven ventilation extraction.

How does the eControl Conversion work?

RH Hotplate Element: 1500w

LH Hotplate Element: 2000w

Oven Element (Top): 1000w

Oven Element (Middle): 750w

Oven Element (Bottom): 750w

3 Oven LH Top Oven Element - 750w

3 Oven LH Bottom Oven Element - 750w

4 Oven Hotcupboard Element: 750w

eControl Ceramic InstaHeat Hotplate: 2500w

(Made specifically by eControl. Replaces the RH hotplate)

As you can see, there will be quite a few electrical elements inside the aga cooker post-eControl conversion. The placement of the elements improves heat up times (the quickest on the market!) and mimics traditional cooking styles. Due to these elements targeting direct heat to your cast iron ovens, there are a few redundant parts.

The old cast iron conductions and convection ducts are removed, alongside the burner pit, cast barrels and heavy cast hotplates. We usually take these away for recycling to save you the hassle, but you are more than welcome to keep anything you might find a use for.

Once all of the loose-fill vermiculite and the redundant cast iron parts are removed from your Aga Cooker and loaded onto our van, the eControl Conversion can begin!

Your original cast iron ovens are modified slightly to make way for the new eControl thermostats and venting. They are then rebuilt in situ. The eControls Tri-Element system is strategically placed around the Right Hand ovens, and the new hotplates are fitted (with their integrated elements). A new insulation blanket is wrapped below, around and above the ovens to reduce excess heat loss and keep your energy bills down.

eControl Conversion - The Pros and Cons

In line with our business ethos of honesty and transparency, we will always give you the pros and cons for your choice of Aga Cooker or Conversion. Being open about the strengths and potential shortfalls of each option, allows us to manage expectations and give you the absolute best solution for your lifestyle.

Considering a conversion for your Traditional 'Always On' Aga Cooker?

We've laid out all the details, pros and cons, as well as technical details you need.

ElectricKit vs eControl Comparison

Advantages of the eControl Conversion:

  • Innovative company - constantly improving the system.
  • Aesthetically pleasing glass control panel.
  • Mimics the oven heat distribution of a traditional model.
  • Hotplates are independently controlled from 0c up to 370c.
  • Hotplates are both capable of reaching boiling temperatures.
  • ECO Mode for improved efficiency and even faster heat up times.
  • Manually set temperatures for each oven.
  • Digital temperature displays for each cast iron oven.
  • High spec insulation throughout.
  • Hotplates can be left on ECO 24/7 for efficiency.
  • Ability to add third party ON/OFF timer to the power supply.
  • Option to add an external fan for assisted oven vent extraction.
  • InstaHeat ceramic electric hob available for instant heat.
  • More insulation used during the conversion process (vs other conversion kits).

Disadvantages of the eControl:

  • Newer company on the market (EST 2021)
  • Top runner of the Roasting Oven is occupied by a removable metal baffle plate to dissipate heat.
  • Inconsistencies with aesthetic aspects (different LED screen colours, badge colours, matt/gloss displays etc. None affect functionality).
  • Floor of the ovens can be hotter than a traditional model - a grill shelf may be required if cooking on the floor for long periods.
  • Fixed power cable length from the control panel (300mm from AGA). Additional cost for added length.
  • No temperature displays or markings for hotplates.
  • Hotplates can only be left on ECO mode (reduced temperature) when the lids are closed.
  • Hotplates turn a permanent dark, patchy grey/blue colour after use.
  • On 4 oven models, the hotcupboard element cassette reduces the space in the bottom LH oven.
  • On 4 oven models, the hotcupboard is only controlled via on/off button - no temperature control is available.
  • No induction hob option available.
  • More difficult for engineers to replace elements - vs ElectricKit.
  • No integrated WiFi option - only available with a third party timer.
  • Strong smells after first switch on. Ventilation may be required for the first few hours at least.

We also offer the popular, reliable, ElectricKit System, as an alternative option for conversion.

The eControl Conversion - Heat Up Times

With your traditional 'always on' Aga Cooker, you don't have to think about heat up times - it's always on! Unfortunately, this means that it's always using energy (even overnight). The eControl Conversion makes your Aga Cooker efficient, giving you the flexibility of turning parts on and off, as well as turning temperatures up and down. If you'd like to turn your eControl Aga Cooker off, or on a more efficient 'slumber' setting, you will need to know about pre-heat times.

Bear in mind, you can utilise a third-party timer to automatically turn either your hotplates on/off, or your ovens on/off. This way, you won't need to *think* about pre-heating your eControl Aga Cooker! Time it to reach temperature by breakfast, turn off over lunch then back up to full temperature for dinner, before turning off overnight - perfect.

Top Right Hand Oven

the below are approximations

(from cold) – Roasting (220c) in 1hr 32 mins.

(from cold) - Baking (180c) in 1hr 15 mins.

The timings above include a 30 minute temperature stabilisation period as recommended by the manufacturer.

The Bottom Right Hand Oven will have some passive heat when the Top Right Hand Oven is on. When on traditional roasting setting, it will act similar to a warming oven.

Hotplates

the below are approximations

(from cold) – Simmering Temp in 8-10 mins.

(from cold) - Boiling Temp in 15 mins.

When always recommend using your RH Hotplate as your preferred hotplate, since it may be already warm due to the ambient heat if the ovens below are already on.

eControl Aga Cooker - Running Costs

As with every Aga Cooker, each one will have its own idiosyncrasies and will run slightly different (one of the joys of individual, non-conventional cookers!). Your eControl Conversion will be similar, with every family having their own lifestyle and habits.

  • If your main priority is low running costs, you have the ability to run your Top RH Oven as and when required - even timing them to come on automatically. You can use the hotplates as and when required, but they are the most expensive part to run. Utilising the floor of your (already on) ovens will be more efficient.

  • If your main priority is ambient room heat, you have the ability to turn your Top RH Oven to a full roasting temperature (between 220c-240c), and turn on both hotplates to ECO, with their lids down. Of course, your running costs will increase when your cooker in on full power.

For a nice in-between, and quicker heat up times, we recommend utilising the ECO setting on the ovens, which automatically turns your Top RH Oven into a Baking Oven (180c), and turns other ovens off. You can then switch to manual mode when hotter temperatures are required.

The manufacturers of the eControl System have given us consumption data for each modes. We'll list these in kWh to allow you to do your own calculations based on your own energy tariff (make sure to check your unit cost and daily standing charge).

All prices and consumption data are approximations and will change with the size of the room, weight/temperature of food and frequency of use.

An Induction hob will drastically reduce hotplate consumption.
