How to light your Gas Aga Cooker

Looking for Lighting Instructions for Gas Aga Cookers? Just follow the steps below.

At Saltire Cookers, we refurbish traditional models of Aga cookers, including gas, as well as oil and our popular electric models.

We also offer Electric Conversions for cheaper running costs, and refurbishments for existing cookers - we're busy boys!

If you need to light your Gas Aga cooker, we've got some easy-to-follow instructions here.

Nowadays, Gas Aga Cookers are usually running from two types of gas valve - Maxitrol or Eurosit.
Some use older Mark 1 or 'Junkers' burners, which are discontinued with no spares available.

How to Light Maxitrol Gas Valves

If your flame has recently extinguished, wait at least 3 minutes before attempting to relight.

1. Identify your burner control dials - Temperature control is the top left black dial, and the Main Control is the top right black dial.

2. Turn the temperature control dial down to the minimum setting (either number 1 or the small end of the scale - depending on age/type of Maxitrol valve).

3. Turn the Control dial to its OFF position (the 3 o'clock position as you're looking at it).

4. Make sure the main Gas Stop Tap is turned to its ON position.

5. Turn the Control dial anti-clockwise, to the star/spark symbol.

6. Depress the whole Control dial and keep it down for at least 5 seconds - to allow gas to enter the flow pipes. Keep it pressed down for the next step.

7. Keeping the Control dial pressed down, turn it anticlockwise to the next position (the small flame symbol), to activate the piezo. Keep it pressed down for the next step.

8. With the small pilot lit, keep the Control dial depressed for a further 10 seconds for the flame to establish and heat the thermocouple. If it extinguishes, try the process again.

9. Turn the Control dial anti-clockwise to the large flame.

10. Now turn the Temperature control dial to the low fire position (either 1-2 on numbered dials, or very slightly into the white zone, on dials with a scale). You should see a small flame appear through the glass inspection window into the burner.

Leave this small low-fire flame for at least an hour, for all your flue ways to heat up enough for up draught.

After an hour, turn the Temperature control dial to the normal operating position (either between 5-7 for numbered dials, or middle of the green band for dials with a scale).

After a further 8hrs, your cooker should be at temperature. Any adjustments to the temperature dial position should be made sparingly, and your cooker left overnight for the heat to settle before any further readings taken from the heat indicator/thermometer on the cooker front plate.

How to Light Eurosit Gas Valves

If your flame has recently extinguished, wait at least 3 minutes before attempting to relight.

1. Turn the cooker to its OFF position (solid black dot on the dial) and make sure the Gas Stop Tap is turned on (photo above).

2. Turn the dial anticlockwise to the star/spark symbol.

3. Press the dial down with one hand. Using the other hand, after a few second, repeatedly press the ignitor button (to the left) until a small pilot light is established, visible through the viewing window into the burner.

4. Keep the dial depressed for a further 30 seconds once the pilot light is established. If it goes out, wait at least 3 minutes before relighting.

5. After 30 seconds, slowly release the dial, then turn to the low fire setting (the small white box on dials with the scales, or for numbered dials, the start of the numbers). You'll see the main burner bar ignite, through the small glass viewing window.

Leave the burner in low fire for at least an hour, for all your flue ways to heat up enough for up draught.

After an hour, turn the dial to the normal operating position (either between 5-7 for numbered dials, or the green band for dials with a scale).

After a further 8hrs, your cooker should be at temperature. Any adjustments to the temperature dial position should be made sparingly, and your cooker left overnight for the heat to settle before any further readings taken from the heat indicator/thermometer on the cooker front plate.
